Matthew, in His Gospel, quotes Micah 5:2 in order to make the point that Jesus' birth in Bethlehem is a direct fulfillment of Micah 5:2. Just as the prophet foretold 700 years before Jesus was born, the Messiah was born in Bethlehem. This makes the point that Jesus is the promised Ruler, the Shepherd of Israel

READ: John 12:12-16
Just as Zechariah prophesied, Jesus entered into Jerusalem mounted on a donkey as the people began to recognize Him as the promised King of Israel saying, "Hosanna! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, even the King of Israel." Jesus is the great Messiah King who will bring salvation and peace to Israel and to all who believe in Him!

Just as the prophet Zechariah prophesied, Jesus, the Messiah, was betrayed for just 30 pieces of silver by Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus' own disciples.
The Suffering Servant

DIGGING DEEPER...
READ: Matthew 8:14-17, John 12:37-41, Luke 22:35-38, 1 Peter 2:19-25, Acts 8:26-35
Isaiah predicted the suffering of the Messiah 700 years before Jesus came, and just as He predicted, so it happened. The following verses all quote Isaiah 53 and apply it to Jesus as the suffering Servant: Matthew 8:14-17; John 12:37-41; Luke 22:35-38; 1 Peter 2:19-25; Acts 8:26-35. When Isaiah talks about “transgressions” and “iniquities,” do you know what he is talking about? (He is talking about sin.) Our sin is deserving of punishment, but Jesus did not deserve to die because He was perfect and sinless. Even though He didn’t deserve it, He willingly took the punishment that WE deserved.

READ: Matthew 27:22-50, Mark 15:16-41, Luke 23:33-49, John 19:1-30.
Many passages in the New Testament testify of Jesus' death on the cross. All four Gospels detail this event which was foretold long ago: Matthew 27:22-50, Mark 15:16-41, Luke 23:33-49, John 19:1-30. John even quotes directly from Psalm 22:18 in John 19:24 and Psalm 22:31 in John 19:30. Jesus died in the exact way the Old Testament foretold of the Messiah 700 years before Jesus' birth. When Jesus was crucified on the cross, they pierced His hands and feet with nails. Soldiers cast lots for Jesus clothing (this is like rolling the dice to win something). And just before Jesus died, what were His last words? (“My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” - the first line of Psalm 22).

READ: Matthew 28:1-6, Mark 16:1-6, Luke 24:1-49, John 20:1-29, Acts 2:22-32
After Jesus died on the cross and was layed in the tomb, He rose from the dead on the third day. Matthew testifies to this (Matthew 28:1-6), as well as Mark (Mark 16:1-6), and Luke (Luke 24:1-49), and John (John 20:1-29). In the book of Acts, Peter quotes Psalm 16 directly, claiming that Jesus fulfilled this Psalm directly: READ Acts 2:22-32 to see how Jesus fulfills this Psalm. Because Jesus rose from the dead, believers can be confident that they too will be rasied from the dead unto eternal life.
Jesus is the Seed of the woman. The New Testament never calls Jesus the Seed of the woman directly, but it does call him the "last Adam" (1 Cor. 15:45) and the point of the Seed of the woman was to replace the first Adam who failed to rule. Also, Jesus is the one who will one day crush the serpent once and for all and rule forever according to what is good in God's eyes (Rev 20:1-3). For deeper study and appreciation of Jesus' present and future fulflment of this, read all of 1 Corinthians 15:20-58 AND Revelation 20:1-22:7.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus is presented as the Passover Lamb who is inspected, found innocent, and slain on the cross for the sins of the people (John 18-19). Read Revelation 5:6-14 for deeper appreciation of Jesus as the Lamb who not only took away the sins of the world at His death, but will also one day inherit the world and rule forever.

Some of the people of Israel even recognized Jesus as this special Prophet.

The Messiah (Anointed One)

DIGGING DEEPER...
READ: Matthew 16:16, Revelation 2:26-29, Revelation 12:5, Revelation 19:15
Any time Jesus is refered to as the "Christ" (meaning "Messiah") or the "Son of God" in the New Testament (which is a lot of times), it is borrowing the language from Psalm 2. For example, when Peter in Matthew 16:16 says to Jesus, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," he is saying Jesus is the Messiah from Psalm 2 who will inherit the nations as His own posession and destroy His enemies in the day of His wrath. The book of Revelation builds on this, quotiing Psalm 2 directly: READ Psam 2 again and then READ Revelation 2:26-29, 12:5, and 19:15. Jesus is the LORD's anointed, the Son of God.
The Seed Of David

DIGGING DEEPER...
READ: Matthew 15:22, Matthew 20:30, Matthew 21:15, Acts 2:29-36, Revelation 22:16
Many passages in the New Testament refer to Jesus as the Seed or Son of David. Matthew's Gospel focuses on this quite a bit. Several people in the Gospel call Jesus the Son of David as they are being healed or requesting healing from Jesus (Matthew 15:22, 20:30). In Matthew 21:15, the children of Israel were crying out about Jesus, "Hosanna to the Son of David." In the book of Acts, Peter also describes Jesus as the Son of David (Read: Acts 2:29-36). Finally, Jesus Himself refers to Himself as the "seed"/"descendent" of David (Read: Revelation 22:16). The point is that Jesus is the promised King from David’s line (seed) who would rule forever on David’s throne in Jerusalem.

READ: 1 Corinthians 10:4, Matthew 16:16, Ephesians 2:19-22
Many passages in the New Testament paint Jesus as the Rock of the LORD's salvation, but some explicitly refer to Him as the Rock. For example, in 1 Corinthians 10:4, Paul says that the Rock from the Old Testament is Christ. Also, when Peter confessed that Jesus is the Messiah (the Christ) and the Son of God in Matthew 16:16, Jesus replied, "...upon this Rock I will build my church." The Rock here is not Peter, but Jesus Himself. The church is built upon Jesus the Messiah, the Rock of the LORD (see Ephesians 2:19-22).
The One To Bring Rest

DIGGING DEEPER...
READ: Matthew 11:28, Revelation 21:1-6
In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." The rest Jesus promises here is not general rest from anxieties, it is the rest that believers have been hoping will come since Genesis 3. It is a complete reversal of the curses upon creation. All who come to trust in Jesus will one day experience this rest when Jesus returns. Revelation 21:1-6 describes this future day of rest that Jesus will one day bring to the earth for all who believe in Him.

READ Zechariah 14:1-9 again and then READ Revelation 22:1-5. Notice that John is explaining in Revelation the same scene that Zechariah prophsied about in the Old Testament. Jesus is the one who will be victorious over the nations in that day and will make the New Jerusalem the center for His rule over the whole earth forever and ever!

When Jesus appeared, He healed many blind, deaf, and lame people. He even raised Lazarus from the dead! Jesus did these signs to prove that He is the One the Old Testament predicted would heal Israel from being blind, deaf, and lame and cause them to return to the LORD (for example READ Matthew 8-9). When He returns as King, He will eliminate ALL sickness and raise ALL believers from the dead (Revelation 21:4).
